HDCA has taken the step of writing to the DfT, with a copy to MP Andrew Jones, to ask for help in getting the county council to fulfil its responsibilities.

On 9th May 2020, the Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps instructed local authorities to give more space to active travel. This was to include pop-up bike lanes, wider pavements, and cycle and bus only streets.

Shapps made it clear that the government expected local authorities to make significant changes to their road layouts to give more space to cyclists and pedestrians.

Since then, North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) has made a token gesture by widening the pavements on three streets in Harrogate town centre, but done nothing elsewhere and made no provision for cycling.

HDCA has therefore written to the DfT asking it to liaise with NYCC over pop-up cycle facilities, and provide help and expertise if necessary. We’ve copied the letter to Andrew Jones MP and asked him to assist.

We await a prompt and helpful reply.
