Today we – a delegation of three from Harrogate Cycle Action – met with North Yorkshire Council Leader Carl Les and Corporate Director Karl Battersby.

We raised our concerns about the lack of progress on the council’s main cycle projects in Harrogate & Knaresborough over the last 9 years, since the Yorkshire Showground Greenway was delivered in 2014.

The projects are:

  • Harrogate Cycleway 1 (High Bridge Knaresborough to Cardale Park), 2015 onwards
  • the four routes in the Harrogate Cycle Infrastructure Plan from 2019
  • the three routes funded by ATF2 in 2020
  • Beech Grove modal filters put in in 2021 and removed in 2022
  • the cycle network Zone Plan work we have been doing with North Yorkshire since 2021
  • Harrogate Transport Improvements Programme (HTIP) for Leeds Road, started 2019
  • Harrogate Station Gateway, started 2019

Our concerns about these projects – that no on-the-ground improvements have been delivered in 9 years – are set out in this summary document, which we presented to North Yorkshire.

Our Asks

We asked that North Yorkshire radically improve delivery of its cycling schemes. This will mean:

  • leadership to drive delivery of active travel schemes
  • the formation of the Active Travel Team already mooted by the council as soon as possible
  • the delivery of at least some improvements to Harrogate’s cycle network now

It seems as though the points we made were understood, and we will find out whether this results in a change of approach by North Yorkshire.
