New cycle parking on Cold Bath Road
New cycle parking on Cold Bath Road

North Yorkshire Council has put in new Sheffield stands on Cold Bath Road. There are now two stands where previously there was only one.

The Sheffield stand that was there before was widthways across the footway. Our request was that new stands be placed lengthways so that they did not block the footway.

(The adjacent area to the right in the image is technically private land owned by the shops).

Initially the new stands were put in widthways, still blocking the footway, but this was swiftly rectified.

The extra cycle parking is welcome.

From originally discussing the matter in May 2022, it has taken more than a year for on-the-ground action to happen.

Increasing Cycling Rates by 900%

North Yorkshire Council claims to want to increase cycling by 900% by 2030.

That is the ambitious goal set out in the Routemap to Carbon Negative for the York & North Yorkshire region, which the council has endorsed.

What would that mean on Cold Bath Road? I suggest:

  • small projects like the cycle parking would be delivered more quickly
  • there would be greater ambition. For example, the council would put in cycle hangars to provide secure cycle parking for people who live in flats without space to keep bikes
  • Cold Bath Road itself would be made safe for cycling

This is our plan for Cold Bath Road. It would become one way for motor vehicles, creating space for cycle tracks either side of the road.
