Active Travel England launches tomorrow, Monday 24th January 2022. It will start work this Summer from offices in York.

According to a government press release, its roles will be:

  • to drive up standards of walking and cycling infrastructure
  • to manage the national active travel budget and award funding for new projects
  • to inspect local authorities and publish reports on their active travel performance
  • to help train local authority staff in best practice
  • to be a statutory consultee on major planning applications and make sure developments cater for active travel

Chris Boardman is to be interim Active Travel Commissioner, then there will be an open competition for the permanent role.

Boardman said that there are pockets of best practice around the country, and the time has come to build on them so the whole nation can travel easily and safely around neighbourhoods without relying on cars.

‘It’s time for a quiet revolution.’
