Harrogate Cycle Action is strongly in favour of the proposed Otley Road cycleway.
We believe that heavy traffic on Otley Road puts people off riding bikes there – yet it is a key route for many between home and the town centre and/or employment (for example at Cardale Park).
The county council successfully applied for funding from central government. With the help of consultants, they have drawn up plans for a cycle route which, while not perfect, will be of distinctly better quality than most cycle routes built in Harrogate District to date.
A public engagement event was held at Harrogate Grammar School on 21st January 2019.
According to the original timetable, the first section should have been finished by September 2019. Unfortunately, the work has been delayed several times, and it still hasn’t begun.
The latest information on NYCC’s West Harrogate Sustainable Improvement Package page is that work on part of the route only (Harlow Moor Road to Arthur’s Avenue) is to start at the end of February or beginning of March 2020.
We look forward to the start of the work without any further delay.
Although we understand the reasons for building the cycleway in three phases, routes do of course need continuity in order to be useful. We trust that NYCC will proceed with drive and urgency to complete the whole route.
