The Harrogate Station Gateway project is to go to Councillors on the Harrogate & Knaresborough Area Committee for their views. This comes after largely positive third consultation results.
The Area Committee meeting takes place on 5th May 2023.

Political Games
The Stray Ferret reports that funding for Harrogate Station Gateway was secured in March 2020, but North Yorkshire is yet to take a final decision on proceeding.
The article suggests that Conservative Executive Member for Transport Keane Duncan wants to let the Lib Dems take the credit for the scheme. There are 8 Lib Dems out of the total of 14 Councillors on the Area Committee.
Cllr Duncan is reported as follows:
‘It would be very difficult for us to proceed with the scheme if local elected Councillors were opposed. The people of Harrogate and Knaresborough have elected councillors. The majority of those are not Conservative, they are of a different political persuasion to the Executive. We want to listen to what those Councillors say.’

Cllr Duncan also says that there are great advantages to improving pedestrian and cycle links and making this part of town a better place to spend time, and on balance he is supportive.
He points out that the positive and neutral responses to the 3rd consultation outnumber the negative ones.
It would be a great shame to hand back £11 million of funding, he says.
